Frisbee - Disc Dog History: The sport got its start in the early 1970's. On August 4, 1974 Alex Stein, a 19-year-old college student from Ohio, and his dog, Ashley Whippet, jumped the fence at a nationally broadcast baseball game between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Cincinnati Reds. Stein had with him a couple frisbees, which he threw for Ashley. Ashley astonished the crowd with her disc-catching, leaping 9 feet in the air to snag the Frisbees. Afterwards, Stein was arrested, but the damage was done, Disc Dog had captured the interest of the Nation. Alex Stein went on to help start competitive Disc Dogging.

Almost any type of dog can catch a disc, the most popular breeds involved in competitive disc dogging are border collies and Australian Shepherds. Many past champions of the sport have been mixed breeds. Rescue dogs are very popular with the higher caliber players.
